Meta descriptions can improve your click-through rate from the major search engines – if you are thinking about your customers when you create them.
Most of the time you will desire to have meta tags that pertain directly to the page you have created so that the search engines know what that page is about. For example, if the page you have created is for selling various pen and pencil holders (yes, I did just look around my desk to find a subject to use), you might include the following as your meta tags or keywords:
- metal pen holder
- wicker pencil basket
- unique highlighter bin
Clearly, these are just examples. If you are truly a website selling pencil, pen, or even dedicated highlighter holders, you might choose better tags than I can come up with. The point, though, is to think outside the product itself that you are selling to the overall picture of what you are offering. So, if you wish to improve click-through, you might think to include information that potential buyers might find intriguing:
- free samples
- shipping included
- lowest price guaranteed
It may not seem like the obvious choice for a meta tag to use for people to find your page selling official Twilight movie crayon holders, but it will help when people are deciding whether to choose your site to click on because you offer free shipping to Pond Inlet, Nunavut!
Try it on your site today and let us know how it worked for you.
