Mobilegeddon – Check Your Analytics!
Unless your head is buried in the sand someplace, you’ve heard that Google is bringing “Mobilegeddon” to a mobile device near you (likely the one in your pocket or purse). And if you don’t know what I’m talking about, you should read this post before you read what I’m about to tell you.
In a nutshell – if you don’t have a mobile-friendly site by April 21, your site will drop in rankings on mobile search.
Who’s Going to Rank on April 21?
In dealing with one of our clients in this regards to their site not being mobile-friendly, the discussion came up that there probably are not many of their competitors on page 1 that actually have a mobile site, which was true. Of the top ten results, there were only two websites that received the “Mobile-friendly” tag from Google. However, there is no guarantee that as of April 21 the first page will not be flooded with only sites that have mobile capabilities. We just don’t know as of today whether a site that currently shows up on page 5 might jump to page 1 because of they are mobile ready.
Why You Should Check Analytics
Our next stop was Google Analytics, which is where we suggest you go right now to check on your site or your client’s site’s traffic. When was the last time you checked exactly where the organic traffic was coming from? We have to admit, for this client it had been a while. And the results send up red flags if you don’t have a mobile site:
Of the organic search results for our client in the month of March, 2015, 60% of their traffic came through mobile search. And if they are displaced on April 21, where does that traffic go to? Competitors, of course!
So don’t delay, get a mobile site today!
